Family Legends

I'm sure most families have at least a few stories that have been passed down through generations and told over and over again. My family has quite a few. Because of my obsession with genealogy I have always cherished these stories. So it is fascinating to me to do some research to find out the real scoop behind these "legends". Below is an interesting one about my Great Aunt Mildred Orth pictured below. (She is holding her brother's baby Bobbie Orth).

The story I was told repeatedly growing up was that Mildred never married and died in her twenties. My mother was told the same story all her life. It was said Mildred went to spend the night at a friend's home. The house caught on fire and Mildred was the only one who died. Grandma always said it was suspicious because her wallet was missing from her purse. Because of this my Mother was never allowed to spend the night at a friends house and she was always upset if I asked to do so when a child.

When my Grandmother died a cousin of my Mother's came to the funeral home. Mildred's name came up. He was older than my Mother and actually remembered Mildred. We were shocked to learn the story we took as the truth had been made up. It turns out Mildred was indeed married. She did die as a result of a fire but it was in her own home. She backed into the cooking stove and her dress caught on fire, she died a short while later of the burns. The whole overnight at a friends house apparently was made up to cover the fact that Mildred had been married to a Al Collette because he was in prison for stealing a car. My mother's cousin remembered him because his mother would take him to the prison to visit Al after Mildred's death.

I find it amazing that such a story was repeated to cover the truth about Mildred's husband. Maybe it was invented in part because my Grandmother never wanted my mother to stay overnight anywhere. So if you find these kinds of things interesting I would suggest doing some research to find the real story behind your family legends!

An Easter Picture

I came across this photo the other day and since the Easter holiday is approaching I thought I would share my memories of Easter when I was a little girl.

Every Easter my mother would make an Easter basket for both of our dogs as well as for me. Back in those days you never heard anything about chocolate being dangerous for dogs. I guess it effects each dog differently because it certainly did not seem to harm ours. Not that I condone giving chocolate to your dogs because it can kill a small dog! Porky on the left lived to be 17 years old and Snoopy on the right lived to be 14 or 15 years old. Both of them would wait patiently for their chocolate while they had their picture taken. As a child I always got such a kick out of this. I also think it is worth mentioning that I still have the coffee table, end table, stool, and lamp in the picture. They are all still being used in my family room!

Blast From The Past

A month or so ago when I retrieved the mail I found an unexpected package. I almost fell over when I looked at the return address. It was from "Uncle John". Now he really isn't my uncle but was my Father's best friend. John and his family were very close friends of my parents so I always called him Uncle John. I had lost touch with him since the passing of my parents. I actually had assumed he passed away since I had not heard from him in many years.

Turns out he is alive and well at age 82. He recently had many of his old 16mm home movies put on DVD's. He had many movies of our families together during the 1960's. He sent me a copy of one of the DVD's, bless his heart.

I sat and cried as I watched the old black and white movies of my parents and myself as a baby. It brought back so many memories of the house I grew up in. I think it was just the sweetest thing for him to remember me. I definitely cherish these old movies. Here is a picture of Uncle John and myself in the kitchen of the house I grew up in.

That is what I remember most about him--always blowing bubbles for me or making those smoke rings from his cigar. The smoke rings always fascinated me. So this is a big Thank YOU to Uncle John for the great memories.

I Am Still Here!

I know I have neglected my blog lately. Sometimes life just gets in the way. But I have been busy drawing and working on some new items for my Etsy Shop. I had gotten so far behind in cleaning my house--it was a disaster! So I have been cleaning, scrubbing and organizing. Not something I enjoy but it feels so nice to have a somewhat clean house!

Plus it is the dreaded Tax Time. Not only do I have to do my own but I do my mother-in-law's also. The CD drive is broken in my computer so it was days of fighting with it to try to load my tax software. Hubby was able to bring home an external drive for me to use so I finally have it loaded. Thank goodness because my MIL is not patient when it comes to her taxes and has no understanding of computers! That is about it for what has been going on in my life and I will leave you with a silly picture of our "part-time" cat sleeping in her favorite chair.

More Snow!

It is like a blizzard outside as I sit here typing. Of course they were not calling for any snow! At least the kids are back to school for a full day after 2 cancellations and 1 delay this week. Now I hear we might get a HUGE snow storm Monday or Tuesday. I guess I should not complain we have been lucky the last few years with mild winters, but I am ready for spring!

I finished a new color pencil drawing of an owl. I put the background in with photoshop and like how it turned out.

I have not put it in my Etsy Shop yet because I am still fighting with my printer. I bought new ink but it is still printing with black smears. I find this so aggravating. Besides the waste of expensive ink and paper I hate creating more paper for the recycle bin. Also instead of spending my day creating art now I have to spend it fussing with the printer. Hope everyone has a happy weekend!

Some New Artwork and Prints

In a recent post I talked about changing some of my business plans and cutting back on the number of on line shops I had. I also decided to spend more time on my art which I have been missing. I followed through and closed my Art Fire Shop. I have also spent the last few days painting and drawing.

I completed a ink and watercolor painting. The original looks good but it did not turn out well as a print. I am not sure if it is my scanner/printer or the paper I use for prints that is the problem. My color pencil pieces always look fantastic on the Epson Premium Matte paper I use. So I will not use it for prints but it did work great for creating some items in my Zazzle Shop.

I have also started adding some prints of my previous work to my Etsy Shop and Shop Handmade Store.

Of course this morning my printer started printing black smudges. I am hoping it just needs ink replaced. But we have snow and no school today so I don't know when I will get out to get new ink. Always something to throw a curve into my best made plans!
